Upper Body Work: Building Shoulders

One of the most commonly neglected muscle groups following calves and forearms, definitely have to be the shoulders or deltoids. A lot of people ignore this important part of the upper body, not even realizing just how essential it can be to building shoulders effectively. The reason I say this is, the shoulders or deltoids are used in various types of upper body strength movements. Another great side effect is the fact that if you build your shoulders, your upper body will appear even larger and your waist will appear to look smaller. So you can understand how deltoid exercises, when done properly, can be instrumental in boosting strength and improving your general physical appearance.

The shoulder muscles are made up of three separate muscle heads. Each of these deltoid heads need to be targeted during workouts if you’re going to develop well-proportioned shoulders.

What are the three deltoid heads?

1. The front deltoid

2. The side deltoid

-Rear deltoid

Front deltoid exercises: The front shoulder head is typically the strongest of the three. You should give a lot of focus and attention on the front deltoids if you want to really build your shoulders. Because they involve several movements, some of the best exercises for building shoulders are the military press and standard shoulder press. By using these two deltoid exercises, you will be able to effectively build up the entire muscle group.

Exercises for the side deltoid: This muscle helps make the shoulders wider, and is generally important for developing size. While the shoulder press can have an effect on the shoulder head, it’s best to isolate this muscle head to get optimum results. You can give even more attention to your side deltoids by using either dumbbells or a cable machine to do some side laterals.

Rear deltoid exercises: The rear deltoid is the most overlooked shoulder head of the three but is just as important. Isolating the rear deltoids is crucial when building shoulders, if overlooked, you will develop unproportioned deltoids. You can use dumbbells to do rear raises in order to build this muscle head.

Building shoulders – Important or not?

Interested in increasing your bench press and improving your physique drastically? Building shoulders is a must. In order to get the best look possible you need to integrate these various isolation routines into your regular workout routine so you can work your shoulders and build a much stronger and larger upper body region. And you will see amazing strength gains as a result of the essential bench press movements. When you’re targeting major muscle groups, shoulders automatically become secondary. Isolating your shoulders one day out of your weekly workouts is sufficient.
